If India develops any indigenous stealth engine of its own in future, Russia is promising to provide all possible technical support in it. Apart from this, the third major point is that of ‘Bridge Supply’. Until India’s own engine is fully ready, Russia will continue to supply uninterrupted AL-51 F1 engines, so that no one has to wait long to fill the skies with our fighter jets. This is considered to be the largest technology transfer offer ever made by any country in defense history, and the timing of this offer is very strategic.

American engine uncertainty and Putin’s masterstroke

India has been waiting for American F-414 engines for a long time, but recently there were reports that there are clouds of uncertainty regarding the supply of those engines. Some reports have even claimed that the engines which were to be delivered to India on time, may be diverted to some other customer. In such a situation, a huge technical void was created in front of India’s ambitious ‘Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft’ (AMCA) project.

Russian President Vladimir Putin immediately sensed this golden opportunity. Russia knows very well that the engine is the most important link where India needs the most help at this time. By applying a solution to this dilemma, Russia has made a surefire bet to keep India as its biggest defense partner. However, it is worth noting that nothing is completely free in international diplomacy and politics. Defense experts believe that there is another big motive hidden behind this big offer from Russia. Russia very much wants India to once again seriously consider the proposal to purchase its most modern stealth fighter jet ‘Su-57’.

New threat facing the world and the path to the future

Till now Su-57 fighter jets have not been able to get very big international orders. In such a situation, if a big and strong buyer like India shows its interest in it, then it will give the Russian defense industry the lifeline and oxygen it desperately needs amidst the stringent sanctions of the Western countries. Apart from this, Russia has spent a huge amount of billions of dollars on the development of AL-51 and it wants to recoup its old investment by selling this engine to India.

On one side stands America’s modern but highly uncertain technology, while on the other side stands Russia’s old confidence and technology which can make India completely self-reliant in the defense sector. If this historic agreement between India and Russia becomes successful, India will not only have direct access to the world’s most advanced engine technology, but will also overcome the decades-long gap in building its future indigenous stealth fighter jet in just a few years.
