Manchester United’s extensive midfield overhaul appears to be ongoing, even after the confirmed arrivals of Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans. While both new recruits enhance Michael Carrick’s options with additional technical ability and Premier League experience, the club is still pursuing another midfielder who can add athleticism, defensive cover, and the ability to progress the ball under pressure.

Discussions within United have included names such as Carlos Baleba, Manu Koné, and Adam Wharton. However, financial considerations and player availability are expected to influence which direction the club ultimately takes.

With the arrivals of Santos and Tielemans now official, United have bolstered a midfield that required major adjustments following Casemiro’s departure and Manuel Ugarte’s injury.

Baleba remains an intriguing option thanks to his strength, mobility, and Premier League experience, though Brighton’s high valuation could complicate any potential deal.

According to talkSPORT, United have also made an enquiry about Roma midfielder Manu Koné, who is reportedly valued at around €60 million.

Another potential addition is Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton, though his transfer fee is expected to be substantial.

Why Manu Koné could be the most practical signing

While Baleba offers the strongest physical profile, Koné might represent the more balanced and cost-effective solution.

Santos provides ball-winning ability and versatility on both ends of the pitch, whereas Tielemans contributes creativity, passing range, and leadership qualities.

Despite these strengths, United are still missing a midfielder who can cover large areas of the pitch efficiently, stay composed under pressure, and advance play through direct runs.

Although Baleba fits that description, investing heavily after an inconsistent season could be a gamble.

Koné, on the other hand, brings comparable energy and has experience across the Bundesliga, Serie A, and international football, potentially offering a more accessible price point.

Wharton would enhance the team’s ability to build from deep areas, but the likely transfer cost makes him the least feasible target among the three.

Unless Brighton ease their financial demands, Koné appears to offer the best combination of quality, affordability, and tactical fit for Manchester United’s evolving midfield setup.
