The President of the United States ensured he remained in the camera frame as Spain lifted the World Cup trophy following their 1-0 victory over Argentina.

Donald Trump found himself awkwardly lingering on the winners’ podium while Spain’s jubilant players celebrated their triumph.

Accompanied by FIFA President Gianni Infantino, Trump presented the trophy to Spain’s captain, Rodri, after the Manchester City midfielder led his team to a well-deserved 1-0 extra-time win against Argentina.

Both Rodri and Infantino appeared to subtly guide Trump towards the side of the stage, though he still managed to stay visible when the World Cup was raised high in celebration.

The scene drew parallels to Trump’s similarly uncomfortable role in Chelsea’s Club World Cup trophy presentation at the same MetLife Stadium a year earlier.

On that occasion, Trump remained on stage after handing the trophy to Chelsea’s Reece James following their victory over Paris St Germain, with match-winner Cole Palmer later admitting he was “confused” by the situation.

Security around the MetLife Stadium was heightened as the 80-year-old President attended Sunday’s global football spectacle.

Among the other famous faces in attendance were Sir David Beckham, his wife Lady Victoria Beckham, and their sons Cruz and Romeo.

Hollywood stars Matt Damon, Beyonce and Jay-Z, Mick Jagger, Kylie Jenner, and Timothee Chalamet were also spotted in the stands enjoying the contest.

Before kick-off, a star-studded closing ceremony featured performances from Hollywood icon Tom Cruise, pop star Robbie Williams, and American singer Jennifer Hudson.

FIFA extended the match interval in New Jersey to accommodate an 11-minute entertainment show, which included performances by Madonna, Shakira, and Justin Bieber.

The spectacle caused the traditional 15-minute half-time break to stretch to more than 27 minutes.

Spain’s Rodri was seen lifting the trophy next to President Trump as he celebrated with his teammates, a moment captured by photographers from AFP and Getty.

Spain’s triumph sparked jubilant celebrations not only in New York but also across London, where hundreds of fans gathered at Piccadilly Circus and Trafalgar Square to celebrate.

Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez marked the historic victory with a post on X, sharing a photo of the national team along with the caption: “WE ARE WORLD CHAMPIONS!!”

The Spanish royal family also extended their congratulations, calling the win “a triumph that will remain forever in the history of Spanish sport” in a public statement on social media.

King Felipe was seen congratulating the players on the pitch, joined by Queen Letizia and their daughter, Princess Leonor.

Retired tennis legend Rafael Nadal shared a video of his emotional reaction to the victory, captioning his X post: “LET’S GOOOOO … WORLD CHAMPIONS FOR THE SECOND TIME!”
