Hyundai had revealed the Boulder SUV Concept at the New York International Auto Show earlier this year. It is an extremely rugged-looking SUV concept that is expected to serve as the base for upcoming trucks and SUVs in international markets. It looks like Hyundai is considering the Boulder for India too, because we recently came across a design patent image of the Boulder SUV that Hyundai has filed in India.

Hyundai had earlier this year confirmed that, as part of its new strategy, it aims to launch at least 26 models in India by 2030. This includes multiple Hyundai models, including EVs and ICE vehicles, along with premium and luxury models. While there is no confirmation, the Boulder Concept could be one of the models in Hyundai’s lineup.

The image that has surfaced online is similar to what Hyundai showcased earlier this year. The Boulder Concept uses Hyundai’s ‘Art of Steel’ design language. The SUV gets a boxy, rugged exterior design. The SUV comes with a ridged bonnet and an upright-looking front bumper. The front grille gets a rectangular or boxy design along with capsule-shaped air vents. In the concept showcased earlier this year, the Boulder came with a set of LED lights integrated inside the grille.

The headlamps are all-LED units and are vertically stacked, and there are LED DRLs integrated next to the headlamps too. As this is marketed as an SUV, Hyundai is offering a rugged-looking off-road-spec bumper with tow hooks. In the patent image, we also see limb risers, which give it a proper off-road identity.

On the side profile, you would notice the wide fenders at the front and rear. The boxy design is maintained here as well. We see chunky-looking off-road-spec tyres and wheels in the patent image too. The concept had 18-inch wheels, and on the roof, we see chunky-looking roof rails or a roof rack, which completes the SUV look. The Boulder Concept gets large windows for better visibility. While we do not see the rear in the patent images, we have an idea of what the concept looks like. At the rear, we see vertically stacked LED tail lamps sitting neatly inside the flared fender portion. The tailgate comes with a spare wheel mounted on it and, just like the front, the Boulder comes with an off-road-spec bumper.

The interior images of the Boulder Concept are available online and, just like the exterior, Hyundai is offering a black-and-beige-themed rugged-looking cabin in this concept. There is a two-tone, three-spoke, flat-bottom steering wheel, a rotary knob on the steering wheel to access off-road modes, a massive HUD that runs across the width of the dashboard, four split screens, physical buttons that are designed to look like those in an aircraft cockpit, and so on.

The SUV concept is based on a new body-on-frame architecture, and it was initially showcased with the American market in mind. However, it remains to be seen whether Hyundai will consider bringing the Boulder Concept to India in SUV or pickup truck form by 2030.
