In the initial days, he had to struggle a lot due to the weak financial condition of the family. To earn his living, he even did a fourth class job in the Ministry of External Affairs. During this job, he got the opportunity to go to America, where he completed his studies from ‘City University of New York’ and also got married there. Created a stir in Bollywood with their very first film ’27 Down’: Rakhi and M.K. Raina’s Jodi won hearts. After returning to India from America, he started working as an assistant director and produced his first film in the year 1974. He based his film on famous Hindi writer Ramesh Bakshi’s novel ‘Athrah Suraj Ke Sapne’. This black and white classic film was named ’27 Down’. He roped in veteran actress Rakhi and M.K. for the lead roles in the film. Chose Raina. This poignant story of a man torn between responsibilities and desires was directed and written by Avtaar Krishna Kaul himself. But when success was kissing his feet, a major accident happened on a beach in Mumbai. It is said that while trying to save a drowning person in the sea, Avtaar Krishna Kaul himself got hit by the strong waves and died untimely due to drowning in the water. On the day the National Awards were officially announced, he left this world at the age of just 34. He could not even celebrate his historic success, but his only film is still considered a milestone in the history of Indian cinema.
