UPI’s dominance in India! 55.49 crore users made transactions worth more than Rs 24,161 crore in a year

New Delhi. The country’s digital payment platform Unified Payments Interface (UPI) is continuously making new records. The central government told Parliament on Monday that more than 55.49 crore users have been connected to UPI. In the financial year 2025-26, 24,161.69 crore transactions took place through UPI, the total amount of which was Rs 314.23 lakh crore. Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Choudhary gave this information in a written reply in the Lok Sabha.

UPI business increased manifold in five years

According to the government, the number and total value of UPI transactions have grown continuously over the last five financial years.

UPI’s reach is increasing even in foreign countries

The government said that NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL) is expanding the global expansion of Indian payment systems like UPI and RuPay by partnering with various countries. With this, Indian tourists and NRIs are getting easy digital payment facilities abroad. Along with this, partner countries are also being given technical support in developing real-time payment system.

New security measures to make UPI more secure

The government said that RBI, NPCI and the central government have taken several steps to make UPI transactions more secure. These include…

  • 1- Risk based transaction limit
  • 2- Monitoring unauthorized changes in mobile number
  • 3- Security of SMS based authentication
  • 4- Strict security standards for UPI apps

NPCI has also implemented the Comprehensive UPI Information Security Framework (CUISF) 2025 and Mobile Application Security Framework to make the digital payment system more secure.

International payments also got a boost

According to the government, UPI has been linked to the payment systems of many countries. This is making both person-to-person (P2P) and person-to-merchant (P2M) international payments and remittances possible. Due to this, the global acceptance of India’s digital payment network is continuously increasing.
