Five people have died due to an earthquake in the Andes region of Peru. Officials said on Sunday that due to this earthquake of 5.5 magnitude, more than 20 people have been injured and 300 people have become homeless. The US Geological Survey said the earthquake occurred at 9:24 pm on Saturday night.
Many buildings collapsed due to earthquake
Its epicenter was two kilometers west-southwest of Sicaya city in Huancayo province at a depth of 10 kilometers. Peru’s National Civil Defense Institute said the total number of people missing was not known. The earthquake collapsed or damaged many buildings, including local churches.
Luis Vasquez, head of the local civil defense office, said much of the damage in construction in the Andean region was due to the use of traditional materials such as mud and mud bricks. Earthquakes occur frequently in Peru because it is in the Ring of Fire region of the Pacific Ocean. In 2007, a 7.9 magnitude earthquake struck the Pisco province, killing about 600 people.
