History usually points the finger at one specific guy: John Montagu , the 4th Earl of Sandwich . The story goes that back in 1762, Montagu was deep into a marathon gambling session at a London club. He was on such a hot streak that he completely refused to leave the card table for dinner.
Needing something he could eat with one hand without getting grease all over his cards, he ordered his cook to bring him a piece of salt beef tucked between two slices of toasted bread. His fellow players noticed, thought it was a brilliant idea, and started ordering "the same as Sandwich!"


Desk work over dice
While the gambling story is the most famous version of events, some historians think the truth is a little more bureaucratic. Montagu was a highly stressed government official who spent incredibly long hours working at his desk. It is very likely that the "invention" happened because he simply didn't have time to sit down for a formal, multi-course meal.
