London. Scientists’ latest research has discovered that a carcinogenic gene controls an important genetic variation in prostate cancer, which can help in saving the life of the patient. This research has been done by researchers from the Batters Cancer Institute (BCI) at Queen Mary University of London, the Italian Institute for Genomic Medicine and the University of Milan.

The results, published in Cell Reports, describe how oncogenic genes influence the formation of genetic variants in prostate cancer and may lead to new drugs to slow disease progression and improve patients’ survival.
FOXA1 responsibility
According to scientists, the oncogenic gene FOXA1 is a key controller of genetic transformation (alternative splicing) in prostate cancer and it can increase the chances of survival of patients by curbing new forms.
Dr. Prabhakar Rajan, co-author of the research, said that prostate cancer is common in men and this disease is a major cause of deaths. The genetic makeup of prostate cancer is very variable, making diagnosis and treatment of patients very difficult. As information about this genetic variation increases, treatment will be improved.
