Safety Measures for a Lost Mobile: Smartphones have become the central hub for our personal information, banking details, and identity. Consequently, losing a phone or having it stolen is nothing short of a nightmare. However, instead of panicking, it is crucial to take the right steps promptly.
If your phone or number is misused for cybercrime, spam, or financial fraud, you will need concrete evidence to prove your innocence legally. To avoid any future legal complications, immediately follow the procedures outlined below.
Remotely Lock the Phone
As soon as you lose your phone, the first priority is to secure your personal data, photos, and UPI apps. Access Google's 'Find My Device' portal via a browser on another phone or computer and log in using the Gmail ID associated with the lost phone. Then, select the 'Secure Device' option to lock the phone immediately. If you are an iPhone user, immediately visit icloud.com/find as soon as your phone goes missing and mark your device as "Lost." Doing so will remotely lock your phone completely and disable Apple Pay services.
**File a police complaint**
The very first step after losing your phone is to file a police complaint; this is the most crucial initial legal measure. Having a police report serves as a vital legal safeguard should your phone or SIM card be used for any illegal activity in the future. You can file a complaint by visiting the nearest police station or by submitting an online "Lost Article Report" via your state police's official website or app. Ensure the complaint includes your name, the date and approximate time of the incident, the location, and your phone's 15-digit IMEI number. Keep both digital and printed copies of the acknowledgment receipt or FIR safe.
**Block your SIM card immediately**
After locking the phone, immediately call your telecom operator's customer care number (e.g., Jio, Airtel, Vi, or BSNL) to have your SIM blocked. Blocking the SIM prevents fraudsters from misusing bank OTPs, WhatsApp codes, or social media passwords sent to your number. You can obtain a new SIM with the same number from a nearby telecom store by presenting the police complaint copy and a valid ID.
**Freeze banking services and digital wallets**
Nowadays, most people have apps like Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, or net banking active on their phones. To prevent fraud if your phone is lost or stolen, immediately call the helpline numbers of the respective payment apps to deactivate or freeze your accounts and wallets. Additionally, contact your bank's customer care to inform them of the situation and have your card and net banking access temporarily suspended.
**Block your phone nationwide via the CEIR portal**
Visit the "Sanchar Saathi" CEIR portal—operated by the Department of Telecommunications, Government of India—and select the option to block a stolen or lost phone. Click on the 'Mobile' option. Then, upload the phone's IMEI number, a copy of the police complaint receipt, and your ID. Following this, your phone will be completely blocked across all mobile networks in India. Even if a thief inserts a new SIM card, the phone will not work, and its live location will be tracked by the police.
