Jurgen Klopp has confirmed that he is on the verge of becoming Germany’s next head coach, having reached a ‘generous’ exit agreement with the Red Bull group. The former Liverpool manager revealed that only final discussions remain before an official announcement, with the German Football Association (DFB) reportedly close to confirming their top choice for the national team role.

Klopp stated that the move is nearing completion after finalising terms with Red Bull, removing the primary obstacle to his appointment. The 59-year-old, who took on the position of Red Bull’s Head of Global Soccer in early 2025, explained that negotiations have been progressing productively and now only formalities remain.

Although Klopp’s departure from Red Bull has been finalised, he emphasised that the official process with the DFB is still ongoing. Reports from Sky Sports Germany suggest that Klopp could be unveiled as Germany’s new head coach as early as Friday, provided the remaining administrative steps are completed. This would mark his return to management following his departure from Liverpool in 2024.

Speaking to MagentaTV, Klopp confirmed that while the process is not yet complete, progress has been steady. “Nothing is final yet, but talks have been ongoing and everything is moving in the right direction,” Klopp said. “I’ve reached an agreement with Red Bull, a very generous one, so there’s really nothing standing in the way.”

He further elaborated that additional discussions within the DFB are required before any announcement can be made public. “However, many more discussions need to take place because we’re dealing with a governing body and many people need to be informed. Nothing has been decided, but we’re close to being able to make an announcement. Ideally, it should happen within the next few days; the decision will be made,” Klopp added.

The development has been warmly received across the German football community, with several former players expressing their support. Among them is Mario Gotze, Germany’s 2014 World Cup hero, who thrived under Klopp during their time together at Borussia Dortmund. Gotze believes his former coach is the ideal person to rejuvenate the national team.

“What he understands, and what most coaches may not, is how to manage people,” Gotze told The Athletic. “Managing players, managing expectations, bringing people together as a unit — he mastered that perfectly.”

He continued, “He can be very sharp about what he wants and demands. That’s why he was so successful. I once read an interview during his Liverpool days where he said he needed to group players who liked each other so they could perform at 120 per cent instead of 100 per cent. That’s what he did.”

Germany, meanwhile, are looking to rebuild after a challenging few years that included three disappointing World Cup campaigns. The DFB sees Klopp as the ideal candidate to lead a resurgence, drawing upon his successful stints with Mainz, Borussia Dortmund, and Liverpool, which have earned him recognition as one of the world’s elite managers.

In addition to leading the senior side, Klopp is expected to reshape Germany’s coaching infrastructure, assembling a backroom team capable of implementing his trademark high-intensity football. Sporting director Rudi Voller is expected to stay on in his current capacity, offering continuity within the national setup.

The final stages of discussions between Klopp and the DFB are anticipated to conclude shortly. If all goes according to plan, Germany will soon make the appointment official, allowing Klopp to begin forming his coaching team and preparing for the next chapter in the national side’s revival.
