Gary Lineker, Alan Shearer, and Micah Richards are set to continue as familiar faces on the global streaming scene after inking a major new deal with Netflix. Following the overwhelming success of their daily coverage during the 2026 World Cup, their show, ‘The Rest Is Football’, will make its comeback to the platform for the upcoming 2026-27 Premier League season.
Netflix confirms Lineker’s comeback
Netflix has officially announced that ‘The Rest Is Football’ will be back on the streaming service for the 2026-27 Premier League campaign. This decision follows the show’s impressive performance during the 2026 World Cup in North America, where it produced over 40 daily episodes from a dedicated studio in New York.
As part of the new arrangement, the programme will transition from its World Cup daily format to a consistent weekly schedule. Supporters can look forward to fresh episodes every Monday and Friday starting this August. The show will cover the full 40-week football season, offering comprehensive analysis of both the Premier League and the UEFA Champions League.
Partnership extended to include Euro 2028
The renewed two-year agreement between Netflix and Goalhanger, the podcast’s production company, also encompasses coverage of Euro 2028, which will be co-hosted by the UK and Ireland. This extended collaboration guarantees that the popular camaraderie between Lineker, Shearer, and Richards will continue to be a central feature of major tournament coverage in the coming years.
Tony Pastor, co-founder of Goalhanger, shared his excitement about the project’s growth, saying, “We launched The Rest Is Football after the last World Cup, and it’s incredible to see how far the show has come in such a short space of time. We began from such a strong position because Gary, Alan and Micah are genuinely close friends who talk about football together constantly. The aim was to capture that warmth, wit, and energy, and make listeners feel part of the conversation.”
He added, “Netflix allowed us to preserve everything that makes the show special: sometimes serious, frequently hilarious, but always genuine and warm. We’re delighted that Netflix has enjoyed working with the show this summer and has chosen to extend the partnership for a further two years.”
Lineker shares his thoughts on the new Netflix deal
Lineker, who not only hosts the show but also co-founded Goalhanger, expressed his enthusiasm for continuing the project. The former England striker emphasised the unique environment of their New York-based World Cup production as a key influence behind the long-term collaboration with Netflix.
“We had a brilliant time making the show during the World Cup,” Lineker said. “And the response was incredible, so it’s great to be back on Netflix every week throughout the Premier League season. The Rest Is Football podcast will continue across the week too, while the Netflix show gives us another chance to get stuck into the biggest stories.”
He added with a smile, “Expect plenty of opinions, plenty of laughs and, with Alan and Micah involved, probably a few arguments as well.”
Premier League return approaching fast
With Spain lifting the trophy on Sunday to conclude the World Cup, the football world is quickly shifting focus back to club competitions. The 2026-27 Premier League season is set to begin on Friday, August 21, and ‘The Rest Is Football’ will be ready to break down all the opening weekend’s action.
This forthcoming season will mark the third full year of the show since it first debuted on August 11, 2023. By securing a place on a major global streaming service, Lineker and his co-hosts are positioning themselves as leading figures in the evolving sports media landscape. The journey from a simple podcast to a flagship Netflix sports programme highlights the growing demand for personality-driven football content.
