New Delhi: Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez is contemplating retirement from international football after his team’s crushing defeat in the FIFA World Cup 2026 final. Spain beat Argentina 1-0 in the final on Sunday to lift their second trophy, ending Lionel Messi & Co.’s dream of clinching a second successive title.
Martinez, who was one of the standout performers for Argentina in the final, apologised to the fans after his side’s defeat and said he gave it his all. The veteran goalkeeper also hinted at retirement, stating that he is contemplating whether it is time for him to step aside.
“I dreamt we’d win it again, I dreamt of bringing it back to Argentina and making history once more,” Martinez wrote in a post on Instagram.
“The truth is, the pain is hard to explain. There are many things to reflect on and how to move forward, and if it’s time to step aside. I’m so sorry, I truly tried my best to help my country and my teammates,” he added.
Martinez was arguably one of Argentina’s best players on the pitch during the FIFA World Cup 2026 final on Sunday. He made as many as ten saves, the most by any keeper in a World Cup final, to keep Argentina alive in the game till injury time. Despite Spain dominating possession and creating more chances, Martinez’s heroics ensured the game went into injury time after a goalless first 90 minutes.
However, he failed to stop a stunner from Spain’s substitute Ferran Torres in the 106th minute, resulting in La Roja taking the lead at a crucial juncture in the game. Spain eventually held on to their lead to secure a thrilling 1-0 win in the final and clinch their first World Cup since 2014.
Emi Martinez’s Argentina careerMartinez has enjoyed a stellar career for Argentina. The Aston Villa keeper played a key role in Argentina’s twin Copa America titles and their FIFA World Cup triumph in 2022. He produced an impressive show in the penalty shootout in the 2022 World Cup final to help Argentina win the trophy.
The 33-year-old won the Yashin Trophy at the Ballon d’Or ceremony in 2023 as well as 2024 for being the best goalkeeper. He has so far played 67 matches for Argentina in his career. It remains to be seen if the veteran keeper will decide to continue in international football or retire after Argentina’s defeat in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final.
