New research by the Economist Enterprise in collaboration with Brembo has revealed a wide gap between the confidence of the general public and the assessment of transport experts on road safety. The report ‘Safety in Motion: Driving Trust in Modern Mobility’ surveyed the views of citizens and experts in 10 of the world’s leading vehicle markets.

According to research, nine out of ten people in the world feel safe on their daily commute, but only 45 percent of transportation experts agree with this view. Interestingly, this gap is the highest in Brazil, China and India, where about 94 percent of citizens feel that the roads are safe, but only 18 percent of experts have confirmed it. The report also mentions that the number of road accidents is relatively high in these countries.

Research has highlighted over-confidence as a major threat to road safety. Experts have expressed concern that drivers are taking unnecessary risks due to incorrect use of modern driver-assistance technology in vehicles, insufficient knowledge about it and misleading advertisements. As many as 65 percent of experts believe that advertisements for such technology overstate its capabilities.

The report also found differences in feelings of security by social and economic strata. Low-income citizens have relatively low confidence in safety, with millennials being the most confident. On the other hand, Gen-Z and Baby Boomers showed relatively higher feelings of insecurity.

Although roads are perceived as safe, 88 percent of citizens support lower speed limits, stricter enforcement of traffic rules and more effective safety measures. However, according to 68 percent of traffic experts, lack of coordination between regulatory bodies and the auto industry is the biggest obstacle to road safety improvements.

According to the researchers, confidence in road safety should be based not only on modern technology, but also on effective policies, transparent regulation, public awareness and responsible innovation. This research has concluded that trust in road safety has to be earned, it cannot be taken for granted.
