While expanding the responsibilities of the Culture Department, digital transformation and online security have also been included in it.

Kanishk Narayan has previously served as AI and Online Security Minister during the tenure of former Prime Minister Keir Starmer from September 2025. Before this, he was holding the responsibility as a junior minister in the Technology Department. Now he has been promoted and given a cabinet level role.

Who is Kanishk Narayan?

Kanishk Narayan was born in the year 1989 in Muzaffarpur district of Bihar state of India. He is the Labor Party MP for the Vale of Glamorgan constituency in Wales. He began representing the region in the House of Commons in July 2024. He studied Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE) from Oxford University. After this he obtained MBA degree from Stanford University.

Before joining the government, Kanishka Narayan worked as Parliamentary Private Secretary in the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs from July 2024 to September 2025. In September 2025, he was made the Minister of AI and Online Security under the then Department of Science, Innovation and Technology. His experience also includes work in public policy, economic reform, and the non-profit sector.

What work did you do for youth and social development?

In 2012, Kanishk Narayan co-founded Attain Wales. It is a program to increase social mobility and educational opportunities for young people in South Wales. Between 2016 and 2021, he worked as an advisor on matters to economic policy and public service reform. Apart from this, he was also a trustee of the Citizens Advice Bureau from 2021 to 2023. During this period, he was also associated with the advisory panel of Chatham House, Britain’s leading foreign policy institute.
