Spanish content creator Ines Garcia, the girlfriend of Barcelona’s young football star Lamine Yamal, has spoken publicly for the first time after being subjected to a wave of online criticism and abuse following Spain’s World Cup celebrations.
Garcia drew attention at the 2026 World Cup when she joined Yamal on the pitch at the MetLife Stadium, where Spain’s national team celebrated their World Cup triumph. Spain secured the 2026 World Cup title after defeating Argentina 1-0 in the final.
Following the victory, several photos and videos circulated online showing Spain’s players celebrating their historic win. However, fans quickly noticed what they perceived as a lack of interaction between Lamine Yamal and his girlfriend Ines Garcia, sparking rumours that their relationship might be going through difficulties.
The speculation soon escalated, with Garcia becoming the target of harsh online abuse and what many described as a “hateful” campaign against her.
In response, Garcia issued a detailed statement, as reported by the Spanish newspaper Marca, expressing how deeply the online attacks had affected her. “I have been reading the comments about me for hours, and despite trying to appear strong, I am also a human being. I feel and I cry,” she wrote.
She emphasised that being in a relationship does not take away one’s humanity or emotions. “I understand constructive criticism, but there is a difference between that and insult and humiliation, as well as wishing personal harm,” she added.
Garcia went on to clarify that she had never caused harm to anyone, including Yamal, describing herself as someone simply trying to live her own life. “I have not taken anything from anyone. I am simply living my own life,” she stated.
She also appealed to social media users to show understanding and kindness, revealing that the situation had caused concern among her family and friends. “I am like anyone else in life. I have good days and I have difficult ones,” she said.
In her concluding remarks, Garcia shared her hope that online spaces would one day stop glorifying cruelty. She expressed a simple wish—to live peacefully and share her experiences without offending or hurting anyone. “We are all trying to live our lives in the best way possible. I hope we always choose empathy instead of hatred,” she said.
