Spain's World Cup-winning team was welcomed home with huge celebrations in Madrid on Monday, where an estimated 1.8 million supporters turned out to celebrate the champions.
The players and coaching staff returned to the Spanish capital one day after defeating Argentina 1-0 in the World Cup final in New Jersey. Upon arrival, the 26-member squad attended receptions with the Spanish royal family before meeting Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez.
"Thank you to the coaches and players for the style of play, the effort and the victory," Sánchez said. "We have truly enjoyed watching you play."
The team later took part in an open-top bus parade through central Madrid. The bus displayed the slogan "Stars shine together" and featured photographs of the players.
Wearing shirts bearing the words Somos Campeones ("We Are Champions"), the players celebrated with fans, danced along the route and proudly displayed the World Cup trophy.
