New Delhi: Former IPL chairman Lalit Modi has expressed his desire to return to India after getting relief in the FEMA case to the 2009 IPL. He says that the legal battle that has been going on for 16 years is now over and if everything goes well, he can return to India by the end of this year or early next year.

Lalit Modi says that he has got great relief from the decision of the Appellate Tribunal. According to him, he had been saying for so many years that he had not done any wrong and now the court’s decision has strengthened his stand. He said that his biggest concern was always the future of the IPL and now that this matter is over, he wants to move on with his life. Regarding the timing of returning to India, Modi said that his daughter is going to give birth to a child in October. He said that he plans to return to India after spending time with his family.

This matter was to the second season of IPL being organized in South Africa in 2009. The investigation and legal process of this case lasted for about 16 years. Now the Tribunal in its decision accepted that the foreign remittances in question fall under the category of ‘Current Account Transaction’, hence the allegations leveled against them could not be sustained.

During the hearing, the tribunal also made it clear that it was not the personal responsibility of Lalit Modi to ensure that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) followed the rules of the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA). Also, he did not have such financial powers as claimed by the investigating agency. On this basis, the tribunal canceled the fine imposed on him and provided him relief in this case.
