Jaipur. Arun Chaturvedi, the chairperson of the Seventh State Finance Commission, announced that the commission presented its final report to the assembly on February 4, 2026. Following this, the commission organized dialogue sessions across various divisions in the state to gather extensive feedback from local bodies, representatives, and officials, aiming to enhance the effectiveness of future recommendations.
In this context, a meaningful dialogue was conducted on Wednesday with the Secretary of the Department of Autonomous Governance, Ravi Jain, Director Prateek Chandrashekhar Juykar, Secretary Naresh Thakral of the State Finance Commission, and representatives from various urban bodies, executive officers, and other officials. The meeting focused on the financial status of urban bodies, resource strengthening, and various topics related to development projects.
The commission's chairperson noted that the resources available to local bodies based on the finance commission's recommendations are insufficient compared to current needs. Participants suggested developing an effective and transparent system for the collection of various taxes, including the Urban Development Tax (UD Tax), to enhance revenue collection and provide more resources for development projects.
He further mentioned that significant suggestions were received regarding the clear delineation of jurisdiction for municipal corporations, development authorities, and other urban institutions, the availability of updated data on buildings, adequate human resources, and financial management. These improvements are expected to strengthen the efficiency and financial stability of local bodies.
The chairperson emphasized that considering the rapid urbanization expected by 2047, with nearly 50% of the population projected to reside in urban areas, it was suggested that more financial provisions be made for urban bodies to meet future needs.
He concluded by stating that the commission will thoroughly examine all suggestions and facts to prepare a comprehensive and balanced report, which will be submitted to the state government through the governor. This report will serve as a crucial foundation for making local bodies financially more capable and self-reliant.
