An independent autopsy commissioned by the family of Nolan Wells has not provided a clear cause of death, as announced by attorney Ben Crump on Wednesday. This case has garnered significant attention from civil rights advocates and the media, yet official answers remain elusive weeks after Wells' body was found. Crump shared this information during a press conference at an NAACP event in Chicago, noting that the condition of the body hindered a comprehensive forensic examination, limiting the conclusions that could be drawn by the independent pathologist, Dr. Roger Mitchell, who was not present at the briefing.

Crump emphasized that while the autopsy did not indicate foul play, it also did not provide a definitive conclusion. He mentioned that the pathologist could not rule out the possibility of external factors contributing to Wells' death, indicating that the findings are still inconclusive and further investigation is necessary. Wells, aged 18, was discovered deceased on an island off Mississippi's coast, just two days after he had gone there with friends for a Fourth of July celebration.

The press briefing did not reveal many new details but seemed aimed at urging local authorities to expedite and enhance their investigation, according to reports. Christine Wells-Wonsley, Wells' mother, expressed her dissatisfaction with the handling of the case, stating that the family's primary concern is understanding what happened to her son. She conveyed that receiving preliminary autopsy results without any updates from investigators has been both distressing and troubling. Furthermore, she believes that local law enforcement hastily labeled her son's death as accidental, which has influenced public perception before all facts were established.

Currently, officials have not disclosed a formal cause of death, and a state-conducted autopsy is still awaited. The Jackson County Sheriff's Office in Mississippi stated on July 8 that Wells was last seen near Horn Island and urged the public to provide any information that could assist in the investigation. The sheriff's office is working to reconstruct the events leading to Wells' death using eyewitness accounts, physical evidence, and other relevant information.

During the press conference, NAACP President Derrick Johnson criticized the investigative approach, asserting that law enforcement has not adequately ensured a thorough inquiry, regardless of the case's outcome. This criticism follows a recent NAACP resolution calling for law enforcement agencies, including the U.S. Department of Justice, to conduct a transparent and detailed review of the circumstances surrounding Wells' presence on the island and the events leading to the discovery of his body. At a memorial service earlier in the week, Rev. Al Sharpton emphasized the need for resolution based on facts rather than assumptions, stating that true closure for the family can only be achieved through a genuine sense of justice.
