PM Awas Yojana: The Central Government has presented the latest progress report on the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) in Parliament. The report outlines the status of schemes for both rural and urban areas. According to the government, over 3.10 crore houses under PMAY-Gramin (PMAY-G) and over 99.07 lakh houses under PMAY-Urban (PMAY-U) have been constructed and handed over to beneficiaries as of July 2026.

How many houses have been built in villages?

On July 21, the government informed the Lok Sabha that against a target of 4.18 crore houses, 3.92 crore houses have been sanctioned so far. Of these, 3.10 crore houses have been completed. Meanwhile, approximately 1.08 crore houses are yet to be constructed against the targets assigned to states and Union Territories.

According to the Ministry of Rural Development, the Central Government released ₹1,34,242.45 crore for PMAY-G between FY22 and FY26. Additionally, an initial provision of ₹41,924.60 crore has been made for FY27. This amount is subject to change based on the targets assigned to the states.

What else is provided along with the house?

PMAY-G does not merely provide a *pucca* (permanent) house; benefits from other government schemes are also integrated.

As of July 16, toilets have been constructed in 3.08 crore houses. Water connections have been provided to 2.43 crore houses, and electricity has reached 3.07 crore houses. Furthermore, 2.90 crore families have received LPG connections. Additionally, 1.35 crore families have been linked to Self-Help Groups (SHGs).

In urban areas too, the scheme goes beyond just constructing houses; emphasis is placed on providing basic amenities such as water, electricity, roads, and sanitation facilities.

How are beneficiaries selected?

Under both schemes, interested individuals must first apply for a house. The government then verifies whether the applicant meets all the scheme's criteria. Under PMAY-G, needy rural families are identified based on a government survey. It is assessed whether the family possesses a *pucca* (permanent) house and meets the scheme's eligibility criteria. If found eligible, their name is included in the beneficiary list.

In contrast, under PMAY-U, state governments and Union Territories first assess housing needs in their respective areas. Subsequently, project proposals are formulated and submitted to the Central Government. Applicants' documents and eligibility are verified, and those meeting all conditions receive the scheme's benefits.

How to apply for PM Awas Yojana?

If living in a village (PMAY-G)

First, contact the Gram Panchayat or Block office.
If the 'Awaas+' survey is underway in your area, get your name registered.
Submit your Aadhaar card, bank account details, and other necessary documents.
After eligibility verification, your name will be added to the beneficiary list.
Upon approval, funds for house construction will be transferred directly to your bank account in installments.

If living in a city (PMAY-U 2.0)

Apply via the PMAY-U 2.0 website or a nearby Common Service Centre (CSC).
First, check your eligibility.
Then, fill out the application form.
Submit Aadhaar, income proof, bank account details, and other required documents.
The application will be verified after submission.
If found eligible, you will receive the scheme's benefits and can also track the application status online.

How long does it take to build a house?

According to the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, completing a housing project in urban areas typically takes 12 to 36 months. The duration depends on factors such as land availability, necessary approvals, funding, and the project's scale.

The government states that continuous monitoring is conducted to ensure approved houses are completed on schedule. Regular review meetings are held, progress is monitored via video conferencing, and officials conduct field visits when necessary.
