Guwahati, July 23: The flood situation in Assam has seen further improvement as of Tuesday, with water levels in most major rivers receding and the overall impact lessening. Nevertheless, over 200,000 individuals across various districts remain affected, with many still residing in relief camps.

As reported by the Central Water Commission (CWC), the Buridehing River in Dibrugarh, Desang in Sivasagar, and Dhansiri in Golaghat are flowing above the danger threshold but are on a downward trend. The Kushiyara River in Karimganj is the only river still above the danger mark without showing signs of decline.

Despite the positive developments, three individuals are still unaccounted for, one each from Dhemaji, Charaideo, and Karbi Anglong. Currently, over 18,000 people are housed in 95 relief camps, with the floods having completely destroyed more than 400 homes and partially damaged over 1,800 others.

In some of the most severely affected regions of Sivasagar, floodwaters continue to cut off access to several areas, making boat access impossible. Authorities have deployed drones to deliver food and essential supplies to those stranded.

Rescue and relief operations are ongoing, with assistance from the Indian Army, which is helping the civil administration in hard-to-reach areas.

Additionally, the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has ramped up efforts to restore rail connectivity in eastern Assam. More than 200 workers, along with railway engineers and supervisors, are engaged in track repairs and infrastructure restoration in the Selenghat–Amguri section, while work is also underway in the Sivasagar Town–Simaluguri stretch to resume train services as soon as possible.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has visited flood-affected regions in Charaideo, Sivasagar, and Jorhat to assess the relief, rescue, and rehabilitation efforts. He inspected relief camps, spoke with affected families, and instructed district administrations to ensure that all stranded individuals are rescued and provided with necessary assistance. The state government has also allocated Rs 4 lakh as immediate ex gratia to the families of those who lost their lives due to the floods.
