Jaishankar mentioned the meeting and messaging with the Russian Foreign Minister in the X account. Wrote, ‘We have conveyed the message that we are concerned about the safety of Indian sailors in the Gulf region. Apart from this, we also talked about various issues including business-trade-investment-energy, science-technology. We also exchanged views on the current situation in the Gulf region and the Ukraine-Russia conflict.’ The Russian Foreign Ministry also announced this meeting on social media. The X account reads, ‘Indian Foreign Minister S Jaishankar spoke with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Manila.’
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on July 19, the corn-carrying ship “Golden Leo” was attacked while leaving the port of Odessa, Ukraine. A total of 17 sailors were on board the Guinea-Bissau-flagged vessel. After leaving the port, 3 missiles hit the ship in a row. Immediately the commercial vessel caught fire. The sky is covered with black smoke. According to Kiev, 9 sailors and 1 pilot died in the attack. 4 of them are Indians. Another is under treatment in hospital with serious injuries. Ukraine claims that Russia is behind this attack.
