Amit Bhatia’s proposed acquisition of a stake in Liverpool, the 2024-25 Premier League champions, could attract one of the world’s wealthiest figures, as the investment group he leads has invited Amazon’s founder Jeff Bezos to join the consortium.
Bhatia, son-in-law of Queens Park Rangers co-owner and steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal, is working on purchasing a 30 percent share in the Merseyside club, valuing Liverpool at over $6 billion.
Having sold his own stake in QPR, Bhatia is reportedly heading a team of investors aiming to buy into Liverpool. Although Bezos is not yet part of the consortium, discussions are believed to be underway, with hopes that Bhatia’s offer may convince him to participate.
Bezos, whose estimated net worth is around $257 billion, ranks as the fourth-richest person in the world, behind Elon Musk and Google co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin.
According to a statement shared with BBC Sport by Fenway Sports Group (FSG), the current owners of Liverpool, “An investment consortium led, managed and represented by Amit Bhatia has expressed an interest in making a strategic minority investment in Liverpool Football Club.”
FSG acquired Liverpool for £300 million sixteen years ago and have since guided the club to two Premier League titles and one Champions League victory. The takeover was spearheaded by John W. Henry, who has since taken a step back from direct involvement.
Observers have compared Bhatia’s proposed ‘strategic investment’ to that of Ineos at Manchester United, where Jim Ratcliffe and his team hold a minority stake but oversee much of the club’s daily operations.
The 46-year-old businessman and former investment banker, married to Mittal’s daughter, surprised many with his recent departure from Loftus Road.
Sky News reported on Wednesday that Amazon founder Bezos, well-known for his ventures into space exploration and his unconventional management style, which includes meetings beginning with silent reading sessions, has been approached by Bhatia to join the Liverpool investment bid.
Journalist Mark Kleinman noted, “A source cautioned that he was not certain to proceed with an investment in Liverpool FC.”
Bezos has previously explored potential bids for the Seattle Seahawks, the reigning Super Bowl champions, and the Washington Commanders, another NFL team, though neither deal materialised.
Currently, about half of the twenty Premier League clubs are majority-owned by American investors, though Crystal Palace is reportedly considering a sale.
Liverpool are preparing for a fresh chapter with former Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola taking over as head coach next month, succeeding Arne Slot. Slot led the team to the Premier League title in the 2024-25 season, but the Reds slipped to fifth place last term.
FSG’s major triumphs at Liverpool came under Jurgen Klopp’s management, with the German coach’s influence still credited for Slot’s title success.
Now, with both Klopp and Slot having moved on, FSG face the challenge of crafting a new blueprint to keep Liverpool competing at the top of English football. Shaping that plan is expected to be a central focus in Bhatia’s discussions with the club’s American owners.
