Shubman Gill, the captain of Team India in ODIs, is just one rating point away from regaining his position as the top batter in the ODI rankings, currently trailing New Zealand's Daryl Mitchell.
The latest rankings from the International Cricket Council (ICC) show the top five batters unchanged, with Daryl Mitchell leading at 802 points, followed closely by Gill at 801. Other notable players include Virat Kohli (767), Rohit Sharma (758), and Ibrahim Zadran (712), setting the stage for a competitive race for the number one spot in upcoming matches.
Joe Root Climbs into Top 10
Former England captain Joe Root has made a significant leap, moving up four places into the top 10 after an impressive ODI series against India, where he scored 269 runs across three matches.
Gill's Performance in Recent Series
Before the ODI series against England, Gill's rating was just shy of 800 points. His remarkable performance, including a standout 188 runs in the series, elevated him to 801 points, bringing him close to the top of the ICC ODI batting rankings.
In the Edgbaston ODI, Gill scored 80 runs, which helped him reach 803 points. However, his subsequent scores of 31 and 77 in the following matches at Cardiff and Lord's left him with 801 points, just behind Mitchell.
Gill's Highest Rating and Recent Achievements
Gill's peak rating in ODI batting was 840, achieved during the 2023 World Cup, allowing him to surpass Pakistan's Babar Azam. He reclaimed the top position again in early 2025 after an outstanding 259-run series against England, just before the Champions Trophy.
Currently, Daryl Mitchell holds the number one ranking by a narrow margin of one point, with Gill closely following.
Path to Reclaiming the Top Spot
With only a single point separating him from Mitchell, Gill has the opportunity to reclaim the top position by maintaining his excellent form in the upcoming ODI series against the West Indies, starting September 27.
A strong performance in the opening match could provide Gill with the necessary rating points to surpass Mitchell and regain the number one ranking.
Strategies for Success
To secure the top spot, Gill needs to perform exceptionally well throughout the series against the West Indies. Scoring at a strike rate of 100 or above could significantly enhance his rating points, especially when facing high-quality bowling attacks, which are rewarded more heavily in the ICC's rating system.
