On Thursday, Raj Thackeray, the leader of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), issued a stern warning to any potential troublemakers ahead of the protest scheduled for July 26 in Mumbai. He stated that anyone attempting to disrupt the peaceful demonstration on Sunday would face severe consequences.
This statement from Thackeray comes as MNS and Shiv Sena (UBT) have announced a joint march in support of students.
Recent Protests and Political Support
In recent days, protests have taken place in Mumbai in support of the Jantar Mantar movement, demanding the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. Both Raj and Uddhav Thackeray have expressed their support for Abhijit Dipke, the founder of the 'Cockroach People's Party' (CJP), who is currently protesting at Jantar Mantar in Delhi. UBT leaders have also visited Delhi to show solidarity with CJP and other youth participating in the demonstrations.
In addition to the Thackeray family, several other political figures, including Sharad Pawar from the NCP, have also backed these protests.
Police Restrictions Amid Rising Protests
In response to the escalating protests, the Mumbai police have imposed a prohibitory order from July 23 to August 6 across the city. This order prohibits gatherings of five or more individuals. Issued by Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations) Akbar Pathan under the Maharashtra Police Act, the directive also bans processions, the use of loudspeakers and amplifying devices, musical bands, and the use of fireworks during the protests.
