Sri Lanka are expected to announce their squad for the upcoming two-Test series against India on August 1, with preparations entering the final phase ahead of the opening Test in Galle. However, injury concerns surrounding two of the team's experienced batters, Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis, have created uncertainty over their availability. Reports suggest the squad will be finalised around two weeks before the series begins.

Sports Minister to Give Final Approval

As per Sri Lanka's selection process, the squad chosen by the national selectors will be forwarded to the country's Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports for formal approval before it is officially announced. This approval process is a standard requirement for Sri Lanka's national teams.

Once the squad receives clearance, the players are expected to assemble in Colombo before travelling to Galle for the first Test.

Nissanka's Fitness Under Watch

Opening batter Pathum Nissanka is reportedly recovering from a wrist injury sustained earlier this month. The injury forced him to miss the remainder of the Lanka Premier League, and his fitness remains under assessment ahead of the India series.

Nissanka has been one of Sri Lanka's most dependable batters across formats, making his availability an important factor for the hosts.

Kusal Mendis Also Faces Fitness Race

Wicketkeeper-batter Kusal Mendis is another major injury concern after suffering a hamstring injury during the Lanka Premier League. The injury ruled him out of the remainder of the tournament, and Sri Lanka Cricket has since sent him to its National High Performance Centre for rehabilitation.

The selectors are expected to wait for updated medical reports before taking a final call on his inclusion.

India-Sri Lanka Test Series Begins on August 15

The two-match Test series between India and Sri Lanka is scheduled to begin on August 15 in Galle, with the second and final Test set to be played in Colombo from August 23.

If either Nissanka or Kusal Mendis is unavailable, Sri Lanka could be forced to make significant changes to their batting line-up against a strong Indian side. Their fitness over the coming days is therefore likely to play a crucial role in shaping Sri Lanka's final squad for the series.
