Argentina’s head coach Lionel Scaloni has spoken about the uncertainty surrounding his own role and possible retirements among key players such as Lionel Messi and Emiliano Martinez, following their heartbreaking loss to Spain in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final. Refuting rumours and commending team unity

After returning to his hometown of Pujato following Argentina’s 1-0 defeat to Spain in Sunday’s World Cup final, Scaloni spoke to TyC Sports to clarify ongoing rumours. While most of the squad participated in an open-top bus parade through Buenos Aires, Messi travelled directly to Rosario.

Asked about online speculation regarding a viral speech attributed to Messi, Scaloni responded: “I don’t follow social media. I’m not aware of what you’re referring to. I have no idea.” He firmly rejected the notion of internal disputes, saying: “I can’t believe what you’re asking me. We are moving in a completely different direction, guys.”

Scaloni continued, “The important thing is that the players gave everything they had. They showed great character wearing this shirt, and that’s what matters. Hopefully, in the future, whoever joins the national team will bring the same spirit, because that’s the real message.”

Coping with the pain of defeat

Scaloni expressed gratitude to the fans who welcomed the team near Ezeiza airport, stating: “The reception was incredible. It’s tough to accept that we didn’t win, that’s for sure. We carry a winning mentality, but it’s important to recognise that even in defeat, we can still show dignity. There are lessons to be learned from losing too.”

Messi shared similar feelings on Instagram after breaking down in tears at the MetLife Stadium. He wrote, “The pain is immense, and this wound will take time to heal. Still, we must remember the positives — the matches we turned around with determination, the unwavering support from an entire nation, and the effort of this group that once again placed us among the best in the world.”

Reflecting on the future and addressing controversy

With both Emiliano Martinez and Messi contemplating their international futures, Scaloni was asked about his own plans. He admitted, “After a tournament like this, when things settle, it’s natural to start rethinking certain things.”

He added, “We’re here until December. The key takeaway from all this is how everything unfolded. The people understood that the team gave everything, and what happens next is secondary — the most important thing is Argentina. Whether I remain in this role or not, the priority is always this unity and connection.” Scaloni also commented on a controversial flag seen after the semi-final win over England, clarifying: “I’m not aware of it. No one told us anything. I saw it just like you did.”
