Optimism for Medal Success

Vijay Sharma, the head coach for India's weightlifting team, expresses confidence in achieving a significant medal tally at the upcoming Commonwealth Games 2026. He aims for the team to secure between eight and ten medals from the 11-member squad.

Preparation and Acclimatization

Discussing the team's readiness, Sharma noted that the athletes are diligently preparing for the event. He acknowledged the pressure stemming from high expectations but remains hopeful. 'With 11 athletes competing, I believe we can achieve our target of 8 to 10 medals,' he stated.

Training Conditions

Sharma highlighted the favorable weather in Glasgow, which has been beneficial for the athletes. The training camp held in Birmingham was crucial for their acclimatization. 'The weather is quite pleasant, and the Birmingham camp has significantly aided the athletes in adjusting to these conditions. I anticipate a strong performance from them,' he remarked.

Support from SAI and TOPS

The coach commended the Sports Authority of India (SAI) and the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) for their support during the preparation phase. He mentioned that a 25-day training camp organized by SAI and TOPS in Birmingham was vital for the athletes' acclimatization and training focus. 'This camp has led to noticeable improvements in their performance, and I am confident they will excel and bring home numerous medals,' Sharma concluded.
