The trailer for The Great Punjab Robbery was revealed on July 22, featuring the film's cast alongside director Saurabh Varma at the launch event. When questioned about his choice of a heist narrative to convey themes of rebellion and emotion, Varma explained, “I aimed to steer clear of conventional storytelling. The market is saturated with dramas and thrillers on OTT platforms and in cinemas, so I sought to explore uncharted territory. This led me to the heist genre, which adds a new dimension of suspense, high stakes, and drama, providing the film with the intensity I desired.”

The Plot and Characters

The storyline revolves around three robbers known as Stapler, Bouncer, and Charger. They infiltrate the Great Punjab Bank, taking seventeen hostages. Rather than asking for a ransom, they challenge the police with a series of puzzles, transforming the situation from a straightforward robbery into a complex standoff filled with strategy and tension. Raj Kundra portrays Stapler, Mahabir Bhullar plays Bouncer, and Garvita Sadhwani takes on the role of Charger, with Payal Rajput, Paramveer Singh, Ankit Sagar, Amit Behl, Vidhi Khanna, and Kulvir Soni completing the ensemble cast.

Thriller Trends in Cinema

This year has seen a significant focus on the thriller genre in both Bollywood and Pollywood, and The Great Punjab Robbery is part of this trend. The film marks Garvita Sadhwani's debut, while Raj Kundra makes his second appearance in a Punjabi film.

Kundra's Insights on Family and Film

Kundra was also asked if his wife, actress Shilpa Shetty, would consider acting in a Punjabi film. He humorously remarked, “Jitna hamara budget hota hai, utni uski remuneration hoti hai,” indicating the financial differences. However, he expressed a desire to persuade her to participate in a film for the love of Punjab, regardless of budget constraints.

Learning and Growth on Set

For Ankit Sagar, participating in this film was a valuable learning experience. He shared, “Aap padhte hain script aur aap uspar dheere dheere khud utarte jaate hain,” meaning that as you read the script, you gradually immerse yourself in the character. Varma compared Sagar to his favorite actor, Sanjeev Kumar, calling him the film's equivalent.

Behind the Scenes Humor

The cast shared some light-hearted moments during the event. Bhullar complimented Kundra for his mastery of the script, while Varma playfully teased Paramveer Singh, saying, “Isko to ek bhi line yaad nahi rehti,” referring to his struggle with memorizing lines.

Release Date

The film is set to hit theaters globally on August 7.
