Smriti Khaannaa calls out age shaming on reality shows: Entertainment should encourage healthy competition, not age shaming

Smriti Khaannaa believes age shaming has become increasingly common, and she is particularly concerned by the way it is often normalised on reality shows . The actress, who has been part of shows like Ghar Ki Lakshmi Betiyann , Niyati and Santoshi Maa, feels such remarks send the wrong message to viewers.
She says, “Age shaming is unfortunately a reality today. Somewhere, we have started glorifying youth to such an extent that growing older is treated like a flaw, whereas ageing is the most natural part of life.”
What disappoints Smriti the most is seeing age being used to mock contestants in the name of entertainment. She explains, “It’s especially disappointing to see this on some reality shows, where contestants sometimes use words like ‘uncle’ or ‘aunty’ not as respectful forms of address, but to mock or belittle someone. Comments implying that a person is too old or has no place there anymore are often made just to shut them down or score points. Unfortunately, when such behaviour is presented as entertainment, it sends the wrong message to viewers. There is absolutely nothing insulting about being an uncle, an aunty or simply being older. The problem lies in using age as a weapon to disrespect someone. That mindset is what needs to change.”
Smriti believes changing that mindset begins with the way people perceive ageing. She adds, “We need to stop treating age as something embarrassing and instead value experience, wisdom and individuality. Entertainment should encourage healthy competition , not humiliation based on age. Respect should never depend on how young someone looks. A person’s worth is defined by their character and talent, not by the number of candles on their birthday cake.”
