New Delhi: Cricket Australia (CA) chief executive Todd Greenberg has said that the governing body is open to the idea of staging an Ashes Test on Indian soil, describing it as an opportunity to take cricket’s oldest rivalry to key global markets.

The Ashes, which began in 1882, is one of the game’s oldest and most celebrated rivalries, traditionally played between England and Australia. The Aussies regained the urn with a dominant 4-1 victory in the 2025-26 series, while England are set to host the next edition in 2027.

Before that, the two nations are scheduled to face each other in a one-off day-night Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) in March 2027 to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the first-ever Test match. This match will not be part of the Ashes series.

“Our relationship with the ECB but also the BCCI is very strong, and clearly there are opportunities in India to put more content into certain areas. It’s not something we’re currently planning, but it would be certainly open to consideration,” Greenberg told BBC’s Stumped podcast.

“I think Test cricket between us, England and India is still very strong, probably bucking the trend as to other parts of the world. So we want to make sure we continue to grow it and strengthen it,” he added.

This statement comes just a few days after confirmation of the Big Bash League making its debut in India later this year. The opening match of the 2026-27 season between Melbourne Renegades and Perth Scorchers will be played in Chennai’s MA Chidambaram Stadium.

Greenberg, however, recognised the challenges posed by a packed cricketing calendar, with multiple ICC events, franchise leagues and bilateral series making it difficult to accommodate even a one-off match.

“The challenge for all of us in global cricket is there’s only 365 days in a schedule, and we probably need another month or two [to] generate some of the content that we’re trying to,” he said.

The next edition of the Ashes series will be played in England, with Nottingham’s Trent Bridge hosting the opening Test on June 18, 2027.
