Chaturmas 2026: Chaturmas is considered to have special religious significance in Sanatan Dharma. When will the fast of Devshayani Ekadashi be observed?

According to the Vedic calendar, this year the Ekadashi tithi of Ashadha Shukla Paksha will start on 24th July 2026 at 9:12 am and will end on 25th July 2026 at 11:34 am. On the basis of Udaya Tithi, the fast of Devshayani Ekadashi will be observed on 25th July, Saturday. The fast will be broken on Dwadashi Tithi as per the scriptures.

What is Chaturmas? (Chaturmas 2026)

Chaturmas is that sacred period of four months, which starts from Devshayani Ekadashi and continues till Devuthani Ekadashi. During this period, the months of Sawan, Bhadrapada, Ashwin and Kartik come. According to religious beliefs, Lord Vishnu remains in Yoga Nidra at this time, hence devotees pay special attention to worship, fasting, satsang and religious activities. Many saints and mahatmas also stay at one place and give sermons and sermons during this period.

Which rules are considered auspicious to follow in Chaturmas?

According to religious traditions, during Chaturmas, there is special importance of consuming satvik food, performing regular puja, worshiping Lord Vishnu and Mother Lakshmi and helping the needy people. During this time, it is also advised to stay away from anger, lies, negative thinking and unnecessary disputes. Many devotees also give up certain food items as per their devotion and follow religious discipline for the entire four months.

On the day of Devshayani Ekadashi, take bath in the morning and wear clean clothes. Install the idol or picture of Lord Vishnu at the place of worship and anoint it with Ganga water or Panchamrit. After this, offer yellow flowers, sandalwood, basil leaves, fruits and naivedya. Light a ghee lamp and perform aarti and chant the mantra “Om Namo Bhagwate Vasudevay”. Listen or read the Vrat Katha with devotion and pray for the happiness, prosperity and good fortune of the family.

Why are auspicious works not done in these four months?

According to religious beliefs, Lord Vishnu remains in Yoganidra during Chaturmas. For this reason, marriage, housewarming and other big auspicious functions are generally not done during this period. However, the importance of worship, charity, religious rituals and spiritual practice increases manifold. Chaturmas ends on Devuthani Ekadashi of Kartik Shukla Paksha, when the awakening of Lord Vishnu is believed and after this the auspicious activities begin again.
