Although the IPL 2027 auction is still a while away, trade rumours have already crept up in the headlines. One of the biggest of those is regarding the trade between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), wherein the two sides are looking to swap Urvil Patel and the experienced fast bowler Mohammed Shami.

According to a report by Tamil Samayam (TOI), LSG has requested CSK, offering to buy young keeper-batter Urvil Patel and Trading with experienced pacer Mohammed Shami will be offered by the Lucknow franchise. This is one of the possible biggest trades before IPL 2027.

Mohammed Shami switched from Sunrisers Hyderabad to join LSG before IPL 2026. The senior quick took a flying start to the season; the right-armer took vital wickets on many occasions in the first half of IPL 2026. However, he struggled to maintain consistency in the latter half of the season, leaving him with 12 wickets in 13 games at an economy rate of 9.00.

Despite the experience, LSG are apparently willing to say bye to Shami as they now focus on strengthening their batting, as Rishabh Pant is believed to have made a return to the Delhi Capitals camp.

Urvil Patel has been one of the most promising young Indian batters in the tournament. Urvil was bought by CSK for 30 lakh before IPL 2025 and performed to the best of his capability whenever he received a chance to play. After scoring 68 runs in his 3 outings in his initial season, Urvil blossomed in IPL 2026 by smashing 129 runs at a wonderful strike rate of 201.5.

He is an aggressive batsman and keep wicket; his fearless batting is what makes him a tempting choice for LSG, who need to rebuild their top order.

This deal might just be another solved one of the biggest worries for CSK. Their fast-bowling attack lacked continuity in IPL 2026, especially in the overs of powerplay and death. With an experienced bowler like Mohammed Shami joining the fold, their pace bowling attack will be bolstered significantly, along with thickening their bowling group, which already consists of Matt Henry and Spencer Johnson.

The other area of concern for the Chennai franchise is the competition for places in the CSK batting. While Urvil Patel has made a very encouraging start to his IPL career after coming in for injured youngster Aayush Mhatre at No. 3, Mhatre's probable availability once again next season will curtail his opportunities for the time being. So the offer reportedly made is an interesting proposition.

In the process, LSG would see the emergence of a talented young Indian opener who would initially offer free stroking and a perfect start to an innings, with the bonus of providing a competent reserve behind the stumps. Urvil's style of batting was something the franchise was believed to have been seeking after the restructuring of its batting order.

While neither franchise has officially confirmed the trade, the rumours have already received a lot of attention. If the negotiations go through, it will be one of the most hyped pre-IPL 2027 auction moves.
