Manchester United have joined the chase for Germany U21 striker Nicolo Tresoldi, while Roma have seen a €35million (£30m) bid for the player rejected, according to a report.
Most of the talk around Man Utd has centred on their midfield targets, with the club having already brought in Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans and now looking for a third midfielder. Manu Kone, Sander Berge, Tyler Adams and Eduardo Camavinga are among the names on their list.
However, central midfield is not the only position United want to strengthen this summer, as they also intend to hand Michael Carrick a new centre-forward who can step in for Joshua Zirkzee.
The latter is expected to head back to Italy, with Juventus strong admirers. Belgian newspaper HLN says Club Brugge forward Tresoldi is one of the options to replace Zirkzee in Carrick’s squad.
‘Concrete interest’ in Tresoldi is ‘only increasing’, and United have been keen on him for some time.
‘Manchester United has had its eye on Tresoldi for quite some time,’ it is said. ‘A Premier League club, where money is put on the table just a little more easily.
‘If United decides to go all out for Tresoldi, the Brugge side’s plan will truly be in jeopardy.’
Brugge have decided Tresoldi is ‘not for sale’ this summer and have therefore turned down Roma’s opening €35m offer.
But if a bidding battle between United and Roma begins and the numbers rise much higher, Brugge could be tempted to sell.
It is worth noting that Brugge have already sold Christos Tzolis to Arsenal for €40m (£34m) this summer, which could affect how they approach Tresoldi’s future.
The Red Devils are said to be tracking the 21-year-old’s situation ‘very closely’, believing he can make an immediate impact at Old Trafford and also grow into a regular goalscorer in the years ahead.
United want a striker who can challenge Benjamin Sesko without holding back the 23-year-old’s development.
Victor Osimhen has been linked, but a player of that level would expect guaranteed starts, which would block Sesko’s progress.
Tresoldi is certainly not the finished product, but he could develop alongside Sesko, helping United build a long-term future for their attack.
Still, some United supporters may prefer a more experienced striker to arrive, such as Jean-Philippe Mateta or Dusan Vlahovic.
Eli Junior Kroupi is another No 9 United are looking at. He is only 20 but has already shown he can do well in the Premier League.
Kroupi would be costly, though, as Bournemouth are demanding at least £80m to let him leave.
Robert Lewandowski was briefly linked with a shock move to Old Trafford, though he has instead signed for Chicago Fire in MLS.
