Rome [Italy], July 25: Reports indicate that Italy is nearing the appointment of Andrea Pirlo as their new head coach, with an official announcement anticipated by the weekend, as per sources from a sports news outlet.

Pirlo has emerged as the frontrunner to take over from Gennaro Gattuso, especially after high-profile candidates like Pep Guardiola and Carlo Ancelotti declined the opportunity to lead the four-time world champions.

The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) initially explored various ambitious options. Technical director Paolo Maldini and special advisor Leonardo reportedly reached out to Ancelotti first, followed by Guardiola, but neither was interested in the position.

Guardiola's decision was influenced by factors beyond just salary. The former Manchester City manager was reportedly seeking an annual pay of around EUR 20 million, which exceeds the FIGC's budget, according to the same sports news outlet.

Additionally, Guardiola is believed to be considering a break from management after a decade at the Etihad Stadium, wanting to focus on family time before pursuing his next coaching role.

With both Guardiola and Ancelotti unavailable, the FIGC turned its attention to Pirlo.

The 47-year-old is currently at the helm of UAE Pro League club United FC, which he joined in July 2025. However, reports suggest that ending his current contract should not hinder his potential appointment with the national team, as per the sports news outlet.

Pirlo is expected to sign a contract that will last until the 2030 World Cup, with an annual salary of approximately EUR 1.5 million, significantly lower than the figures sought by Guardiola, Ancelotti, Antonio Conte, and Roberto Mancini.

A pivotal member of Italy's 2006 World Cup-winning squad, Pirlo has had a mixed managerial career. He secured the Coppa Italia during his sole season with Juventus and has also managed Turkish club Fatih Karagumruk and Serie B team Sampdoria.

Despite his varied managerial success, Maldini and Leonardo reportedly view Pirlo as a viable long-term choice for the national team. His strong connections with former AC Milan teammates and respect for his mentor Ancelotti are believed to have bolstered his candidacy.

The FIGC aims to revamp the national team, focusing on nurturing young talent, enhancing technical skills, and establishing a distinct footballing identity in preparation for the 2028 European Championship and the 2030 World Cup.
