The ongoing students’ agitation over the NEET paper leak controversy and examination reforms at Jantar Mantar in the capital Delhi has now reached the country’s top court. Petitions have been filed in the Supreme Court against the use of force, lathi charge and tear gas by the police during the Parliament March (‘Chalo Sansad’) on July 20. Considering the seriousness of this matter, the Supreme Court has agreed to hear it on Monday, July 27, 2026. Senior lawyers presented their side in the Supreme Court. On Friday, the matter was mentioned before the bench of Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice V. Mohana. Senior advocates Shyam Divan and Gopal Shankaranarayanan drew the court’s attention to the police brutality on the students. Senior lawyer Gopal Sankaranarayanan requested the bench for an urgent hearing, saying:

"The police is using excessively harsh and violent force against the protesting students. Such incidents are happening daily in different parts of the country. In such a situation, the court is the only recourse between the police and the common students."

The court was informed that the petitions have been allotted numbers by the registry, following which the Chief Justice bench directed to list the matter for hearing on July 27. What happened in the clash of 20th July? It is noteworthy that on July 20, thousands of students under the leadership of Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) and other student organizations had tried to march from Jantar Mantar towards Parliament House. During this, the police resorted to lathicharge and released tear gas shells to disperse the crowd. Many students were seriously injured in this clash, who are undergoing treatment in various hospitals. The main demand of the students is that: Transparency and stringent reforms should be brought in NEET exam and National Testing Agency (NTA). Taking moral responsibility of the paper leak controversy, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan should resign. Hearing is also going on in Delhi High Court. Earlier, petitions were also filed in Delhi High Court regarding the incident of July 20. The High Court has issued a notice to the Central Government and Delhi Police and ordered them to preserve all the CCTV footage and videography records to the incident. Now it remains to be seen what strict stance the Supreme Court takes on this entire matter and the police action on July 27.
