Devshayani Ekadashi fasting story

In ancient times, there was a king named Mandhata. He looked after his subjects like his own children. Everyone in his kingdom was happy and prosperous. Once there was a severe famine in his kingdom. There was no rain for three consecutive years. The fields dried up and the people started suffering from lack of food.

Troubled, the people approached King Mandhata and requested him to solve this crisis. The king assured the people that he would definitely solve their problems. After this the king took some people with him and set out towards the forest. While roaming around, King Mandhata reached the ashram of Rishi Angira, the son of Brahmaji. The king bowed to the sage and told him his entire problem.

The king said, 'O Maharishi! There has been no rain in my state for three years. The people are very troubled due to famine. I rule according to Dharma, yet I cannot understand the reason why this crisis has come. Please suggest some solution which can relieve the suffering of my people.

After listening to the king, Angira Rishi said that this problem can be solved by fasting on Devshayani Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha of Ashadh month. The sage advised the king to observe this fast as per the rituals.

King Mandhata returned to his kingdom and observed the Devshayani Ekadashi fast with devotion. According to religious belief, due to the effect of this fast, there was good rainfall in the state and the people got freedom from famine. After this everyone started living life with happiness and prosperity.
