New Delhi: Delhi Police has identified more than 2,500 people with criminal backgrounds through a Facial Recognition System (FRS) installed around the ongoing protest site at Jantar Mantar, according to police sources.
Officials said the technology has been introduced to strengthen security and prevent anti-social elements from taking advantage of the demonstrations. They clarified that the surveillance system is intended to identify wanted criminals, absconders, habitual offenders and individuals listed as “Bad Characters” (BCs) in police records, and not to monitor ordinary protesters.
Police have installed four FRS units at major entry and exit points around the protest venue. The cameras are directly connected to the Delhi Police database and are monitored in real time by officers.
According to officials, the system captures facial images using high-resolution cameras and compares them with police records within seconds. If the face matches that of a wanted or absconding accused, the concerned police unit is immediately alerted for further action.
A police source told PTI, “The technology has so far helped identify over 2,500 persons with criminal antecedents. It acts as a strong deterrent and allows us to keep a close watch on those who may attempt to misuse the protest to create law and order problems.”
A senior police officer said, “Once a face is captured, it is matched with the Delhi Police database within seconds. If a wanted or absconding accused is detected, the concerned police unit is immediately alerted so that necessary legal action can be taken without delay.”
Police added that the technology also helps identify repeat offenders who have been involved in multiple criminal cases and are classified as “Bad Characters” in official records.
Another officer said, “The deployment serves both preventive and investigative purposes. It enables us to detect anti-social elements at the earliest and strengthens security arrangements without causing inconvenience to ordinary protesters.”
Delhi Police has previously used the Facial Recognition System during major public events, including Republic Day, Independence Day, Holi, Diwali, Eid and Ramlila celebrations, as part of its security measures across the national capital.
