When it comes to movie premieres, Zendaya rarely misses an opportunity to make her fashion choices part of the story. At the Shanghai premiere of Spider-Man: Brand New Day on Friday, the actor arrived in a dramatic archival Versace couture gown that paid subtle tribute to the Marvel universe, while a fresh set of baby bangs gave the entire look an unexpected edge.

Throughout the film's promotional tour, Zendaya has been experimenting with different aesthetics. Earlier appearances leaned into dark, gothic-inspired fashion, but Shanghai saw her switch gears with a look that felt lighter, sharper and undeniably glamorous. With longtime stylist Law Roach once again at the helm, the result was another standout red carpet moment.

Roach later revealed that the gown came from Versace's Spring/Summer 2016 couture collection, created under Donatella Versace's creative direction. Nearly ten years after its debut, the design still looked remarkably modern.

The dress featured a striking contrast of ivory fabric and black crystal-covered mesh that wrapped around Zendaya's silhouette like delicate strands of a spider's web. Instead of going for an obvious superhero-inspired outfit, the styling leaned into subtle references, making the connection feel sophisticated rather than theatrical.

The craftsmanship was impossible to ignore. Fine pleating, sculptural draping and an asymmetric bodice gave the gown its distinctive shape, while a thigh-high slit added fluidity as she walked the carpet. Signature Versace elements - including harness-style straps, metallic buckles and sparkling Swarovski crystal details - brought a bold, contemporary finish to the archival piece.

Rather than layering on statement jewelry, Zendaya kept things focused with one standout accessory. A diamond-encrusted spider brooch by Chopard, centred around a vivid 19-carat yellow sapphire, was pinned neatly at her waist. It was a small detail, but one that cleverly tied the entire look back to Spider-Man.

Her hairstyle also stole plenty of attention. Zendaya debuted wispy micro bangs that framed her face, while the rest of her long hair was left loose down her back. The new fringe added a youthful, slightly rebellious touch that balanced the elegance of the gown.

Her makeup followed the same mood. Smoky charcoal eyes, precise winged eyeliner, softly flushed cheeks, luminous skin and a glossy caramel lip completed the look without taking attention away from the couture.

The fashion moment comes as anticipation continues to build for Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the franchise's first installment in four years. The film picks up after the emotional ending of Spider-Man: No Way Home, where MJ no longer remembers Peter Parker following Doctor Strange's reality-altering spell.

Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, the Marvel film stars Tom Holland, Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Sadie Sink, Jon Bernthal, Tramell Tillman, Michael Mando and Mark Ruffalo. Spider-Man: Brand New Day is scheduled for a worldwide theatrical release on July 31.

For Zendaya, though, the Shanghai premiere wasn't just another stop on a press tour. It was another reminder of how effortlessly she turns fashion into storytelling - finding creative ways to reflect the film she's promoting without ever sacrificing her own signature style.
