Paraguay goalkeeper Orlando Gill earned plenty of praise for his displays this summer, and that has reportedly brought him onto Manchester United’s radar.

The World Cup showed once again this summer that it can still introduce viewers to fresh stars they had not seen before.

A few players enjoyed breakout tournaments that turned them into household names, including Aston Villa new boy Johan Manzambi and Mexico’s Julian Quinones.

Paraguay goalkeeper Orlando Gill was firmly part of that group after a run of outstanding performances, producing the most saves of any goalkeeper and, most notably, playing a crucial role in his team’s penalty shootout win over Germany in the round of 32.

Gill has now gone back to Argentina for training with his club San Lorenzo, but local media reports say the club are now preparing for an offer from the Premier League.

Vamos Ciclon report that there had been a flurry of links to the English top flight during the World Cup, but those rumours had eased until this week, when it emerged that Gill’s representatives were “expecting an offer” from Manchester United.

San Lorenzo are now understood to be searching for Gill’s replacement, although the report adds that the club had not yet received any formal bid.

For FourFourTwo, the link only really makes sense because of the terms of Gill’s contract at San Lorenzo.

Goalkeeper has become a problem area for United since David De Gea left in 2023, with Andre Onana struggling to convince through his inconsistent performances and Altay Bayindir doing little better in his few chances for the club.

Even so, Senne Lammens had an excellent debut season after joining from Royal Antwerp on transfer deadline day. Although he had a nightmare moment during the World Cup, when he came on as a second-half substitute for Belgium against Spain in the World Cup quarter-finals, the 24-year-old Belgian keeper still has many good years left to offer in a United shirt.

The complication is that, according to Vamos Ciclon, Gill has a release clause of only USD $7m (£5.5m), though the Argentinian outlet also add that this is “the minimum from which San Lorenzo is willing to negotiate”.

That would make Gill a genuine bargain if United or any other Premier League club decide to make a bid, even if he were brought in only as cover.

Olympiacos are also said to have made a bid for Gill’s services, but neither San Lorenzo nor the goalkeeper were tempted by that chance.
