New Delhi. India has made a great start to its campaign by winning the first medal in the Commonwealth Games 2026. This historic achievement was achieved by para-powerlifter Jhandu Kumar of Bihar, who gave an opportunity to the entire country to be proud by winning the bronze medal in the men’s heavyweight event. In this match held in Glasgow, Jhandu Kumar proved with his strong performance that difficult circumstances can never stop strong intentions. His medal not only became the first medal for India but also became a symbol of the victory of struggle and hard work.
Jhandu Kumar’s success is considered special because his life was spent in very difficult circumstances. Jhandu’s father, who once fulfilled the responsibilities of the family by driving an e-rickshaw, used to run his household by selling vegetables on the roadside. Despite limited resources and financial constraints, he never let his dreams die. On the basis of continuous practice and self-confidence, he raised the tricolor flag of India high on the international stage.
29 year old Jhandu Kumar started the competition with full confidence. In the second attempt he successfully lifted 190 kg weight and put himself in a strong position in the medal race. This weight was slightly less than his personal best performance but proved to be very important from the competition point of view. After this, he tried to make a big record by lifting 196 kg weight in the last attempt but could not succeed by a small margin. However, his earlier performance proved enough to get him a medal.
The match remained exciting till the last moment. Nigeria’s Riluwan Idris tried to lift 212 kg in his last attempt but failed. With this, Jhandu Kumar’s bronze medal was completely confirmed. After this exciting result, there was a wave of happiness among the Indian team and the audience.

The importance of this achievement also increases because the beginning of the day was disappointing for India. In the men’s lightweight event, the Indian player had missed the medal but Jhandu Kumar gave a brilliant performance and boosted the morale of the entire Indian team. Their victory gave the message that Indian players are ready to face every challenge.
Jhandu Kumar’s story is an inspiration for millions of youth. He proved that to achieve success, strong intentions and continuous hard work are more important than expensive resources. Coming from an ordinary family in Bihar, winning a medal for the country on the Commonwealth Games stage is the biggest proof of his struggle and dedication. Now the whole country hopes that after this first medal, the Indian players will continue to increase the number of medals by performing brilliantly in the coming competitions.
