Indian Railway Recruitment: There is good news for young people preparing for government jobs in Indian Railways. According to the latest data presented in the Lok Sabha, the Railways has made over 54,000 new appointments in the last two and a half years or so. Additionally, the impact of the Annual Recruitment Calendar, introduced in 2024, is now becoming visible. The government states that this has made the recruitment process more regular and faster than before; however, the challenge of securing a railway job continues to grow. For many recruitment drives, thousands—rather than just hundreds—of candidates have vied for a single post.

How many recruitments have taken place in the Railways since 2014?
The Ministry of Railways informed the Lok Sabha on July 22, 2026, that 5.56 lakh people have been appointed to Indian Railways between April 1, 2014, and June 30, 2026. This figure marks a significant increase compared to the previous year. In fact, in April 2025, the government had informed Parliament that 5.02 lakh people were recruited by the Railways between 2014-15 and 2023-24. Now, according to the new data, the Railways has made approximately 54,000 additional appointments in a span of just about two and a half years. For comparison, the government also noted that a total of 4.11 lakh recruitments took place in the Railways between 2004-05 and 2013-14; this figure remains unchanged.

How has the system changed due to the Annual Recruitment Calendar?
The Ministry of Railways states that an Annual Recruitment Calendar for Group-C recruitment was introduced in 2024 to streamline and regularize the recruitment process. The objective was to ensure that candidates did not have to wait long for recruitment, that exam dates were fixed in advance, and that the selection process could be completed in a time-bound manner. Under this new system, a recruitment drive for a total of 161,889 non-gazetted posts was initiated for the years 2024, 2025, and 2026.

**Largest Recruitment Drive of 2024**

The Railways conducted a massive recruitment drive in 2024. During this period, 10 Centralised Employment Notifications (CEN) were issued, covering 92,116 posts. These included positions such as Assistant Loco Pilot (ALP), Technician, Railway Protection Force (RPF) Sub-Inspector and Constable, Junior Engineer, Paramedical Staff, Track Maintainer, Pointsman, and various Level-1 posts. According to the Ministry of Railways, the first stage of the Computer-Based Test (CBT) for all these recruitments has already been completed.

**3.58 Crore Youths Took the Exam in a Single Year**

The immense appeal of Railway jobs is evident from the sheer number of candidates. In 2024, 3.58 crore candidates appeared for exams covering 92,116 vacancies. This implies that, on average, there were approximately 389 candidates vying for each post. More than 1.08 crore aspirants participated in the recruitment exam for the Level-1 category alone.

**Fiercest Competition for RPF SI Recruitment**

The 2024 recruitment drive saw the highest level of competition for the Railway Protection Force (RPF) Sub-Inspector post. There were only 452 such posts, yet 15.35 lakh candidates appeared for the exam—translating to approximately 3,400 candidates per post. Similarly, for the NTPC Undergraduate recruitment, there was an average of 1,837 candidates competing for each seat. **Interest Remained High in 2025**
According to the Ministry of Railways, enthusiasm among the youth for railway recruitment remained high in 2025. For the 29,775 posts where the first phase of the examination has been completed, 9.096 million (90.96 lakh) candidates appeared; this translates to an average of 306 candidates competing for each post.

**Thousands of Aspirants for Section Controller Posts**
The fiercest competition in 2025 was observed for Section Controller posts. There were only 368 such vacancies, yet 433,000 (4.33 lakh) candidates took the exam. This means approximately 1,179 candidates were vying for a single post.

**Which Posts Are Being Recruited for in 2026?**
The Ministry of Railways stated that three new recruitment notifications (CENs) have been issued so far in 2026. Recruitment is underway for a total of 17,803 posts under these notifications. These include 11,127 Assistant Loco Pilot (ALP) posts, 6,557 Technician posts, and 119 Section Controller posts. Since these notifications were issued between March and June 2026, the number of candidates appearing for these exams is not yet available.

**Selection of Over 3,300 Candidates Completed**
According to the Ministry of Railways, the final selection of more than 3,300 candidates was completed by June 30, 2026, for the 2026-27 period. These include posts such as Technician, Junior Engineer, Paramedical Staff, Ministerial and Isolated Categories, and Assistant Loco Pilot. The Ministry noted that a significant number of these positions are related to safety operations.
