Till this weekend, liquor shops in Delhi will close two hours earlier than the normal time, i.e. at 8 pm instead of 10 pm. According to sources, this decision has been taken in view of the ongoing student protest at Jantar Mantar. Earlier on Thursday also, many liquor shops were closed prematurely without any official announcement. Due to sudden closure of shops, many customers came to buy liquor, but had to return.
A senior Delhi government official said, "All liquor shops will be closed at 8 pm till the end of the weekend. This decision has been taken on the basis of inputs received from Delhi Police in view of the ongoing protests at Jantar Mantar."
Why are demonstrations taking place?
Protests have been going on in Central Delhi for the last several days over the alleged NEET paper leak case. Students gathered at Jantar Mantar under the banner of Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) are demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. The protesting students allege that the paper was leaked during his tenure, due to which many students took steps like suicide.
The protest turned violent on July 20
On July 20, the protest turned violent during the 'Parliament March' taken out by CJP. During this time many protesters and some policemen were injured. After this, security arrangements have been tightened and in view of this, a temporary change has been made in the timings of liquor shops in Delhi.
