In an innovative move to boost international tourism and diversify its economy beyond oil, the Kingdom of Bahrain has transformed a decommissioned Boeing 747 aircraft into the world’s largest underwater theme park. Originally purchased as scrap from the United Arab Emirates for approximately ₹9.5 million (₹95 lakh), the giant commercial airliner was intentionally submerged into the Arabian Sea to anchor a massive marine attraction. Spanning over 100,000 square meters, the eco-friendly underwater destination dubbed Dive Bahrain has successfully converted discarded aviation machinery into a lucrative, global revenue-generating tourist hub.
Sunken 100,000-Square-Meter Park Features Traditional Pearl Merchant House And Artificial Coral Reefs
Located off the coast of Manama, the submerged theme park offers deep-sea divers and adventure enthusiasts a unique opportunity to explore the interior of the Boeing 747 alongside submerged heritage structures. To preserve and celebrate regional maritime heritage, the site includes a replica of a traditional Bahraini pearl merchant’s house constructed with eco-friendly materials. Additionally, the park features specially engineered artificial coral reefs surrounding the aircraft, designed to foster marine biodiversity, provide safe breeding grounds for local fish populations, and promote long-term environmental conservation in the Gulf region.
Bahrain Accelerates Economic Diversification Strategy Through High-Value Eco-Tourism Projects
The ambitious underwater project highlights Bahrain’s strategic push toward sustainable tourism and adventure sports as part of its economic vision to reduce long-term dependency on crude oil exports. By attracting professional scuba divers, marine biologists, and international travelers, the kingdom has set a global precedent for upcycling large industrial scrap into prime ecological landmarks. The project continues to draw high-volume footfalls from global adventure seekers, establishing Bahrain as a premier destination for underwater exploration in the Middle East.
