New Delhi: To celebrate four decades of Formula One Grand Prix racing in Hungary, track officials have named each of the corners of the Hungaroring. Half the circuit corners have now been named after legendary F1 figures, including Nelson Piquet, Lewis Hamilton, Nigel Mansell, Jean Alesi, Ayrton Senna, Michael Schumacher, and Ferenc Szisz.
The first corner is now called Piquet in recognition of the Brazilian’s success at the circuit. He won the first two GPs held at the circuit, and Turn 1 was also the setting for his famous outside pass on Ayrton Senna during the venue’s inaugural race. Hamilton was another obvious choice. The Briton is the most successful driver at the Hungarian circuit, taking eight wins and nine pole positions. Nigel Mansell also has a strong connection with the track, having secured the 1992 world championship there.
Turn 11, meanwhile, has officially been named after Jean Alesi. Fans had long informally called the corner “Alesi” in the aftermath of the Frenchman’s crash there during practice for the 1995 Hungarian Grand Prix. Schumacher is honoured for clinching his fourth world title at the circuit in 2001, as well as for winning four Hungarian Grands Prix.
Ayrton Senna, meanwhile, holds the distinction of being the first driver to take pole position at the Hungaroring.
The circuit also pays tribute to Ferenc Szisz, who was a Hungarian driver and engineer who won the first Grand Prix in history in 1906 and later headed Renault’s testing department. As an additional tribute, handprints from Hamilton, Mansell and Alesi will be cast in concrete and placed in one of the Hungaroring’s run-off areas.
The other corners have names inspired by Hungarian landmarks and local history. These include references to the Valley of the Three Springs, the town of Mogyoród, Hungary’s first driver-training facility, Budapest and the Danube River. The process had started during the 2025 Hungarian GP when fans were invited to submit their suggestions. Then a dedicated committee later reviewed the entries and selected the final names.
