Do not make these mistakes while filing ITR, otherwise you may be fined thousands of rupees.

ITR Penalty Rules: If you have not yet filed the Income Tax Return (ITR) or have made a mistake while filing the return, then your small carelessness can prove costly. The Income Tax Department can impose fines under different sections for different types of mistakes and violation of rules.

Therefore, it is important to check all the information carefully before filing ITR and file the return within the stipulated time limit. You may have to suffer financial loss due to incorrect information, late filing of returns or tax negligence.

Late fee will be charged for late filing of ITR

If ITR is filed after the deadline of July 31, 2026, late fees may be imposed under Section 234F of the Income Tax Act. Taxpayers whose total income is more than Rs 5 lakh may have to pay late fees up to a maximum of Rs 5,000. At the same time, people with income of Rs 5 lakh or less can be charged a maximum fee of Rs 1,000.

Penalty on delay in revised ITR

If a revised ITR is filed to correct any mistake and there is a delay, then a penalty ranging from Rs 1,000 to Rs 5,000 can be imposed under Section 234-I.

Heavy penalty for showing less income

If a person has shown less income than his actual income, a penalty of up to 50 percent of the outstanding tax can be imposed under Section 270A of the Income Tax Act. However, in case of knowingly giving wrong or false information, this penalty can increase up to 200 percent of the outstanding tax.

Action on big cash transactions

According to income tax rules, accepting cash amounting to Rs 2 lakh or more in a single day or in a single transaction is against the rules. For doing so, a fine equal to the entire amount received can be imposed under sections 269ST and 271DA.

Action if self assessment tax is not paid

If the taxpayer does not deposit the self-assessment tax on time, action can be taken under sections 140A and 221. In such a situation, additional penalty can be imposed up to the amount of outstanding tax.

Keep these things in mind while filing ITR
Always file ITR within the stipulated time limit
Provide accurate information about all your sources of income
Check all documents and data before submitting returns
If there is any tax due, pay it before filing ITR
File returns on time to avoid last minute rush and technical glitches
