After the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, the opposition has changed its political focus and has now made the issue of police action during the student demonstration in Delhi on July 20. Before the session of Parliament starting from Monday, Congress has intensified the demand for fixing the accountability of Union Home Minister Amit Shah in this matter. At the same time, Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari has also come under attack from critics regarding the E-20 (20 percent ethanol mixed petrol) policy on social media.

Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi said in a press conference on Saturday that the resignation of the Education Minister is an important achievement of the students’ movement, but the issue of the movement is not over yet. He alleged that several students suffered serious injuries in police action during the Parliament march on July 20. Since Delhi Police is under the Central Government, the responsibility for this action should be fixed on Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

Rahul Gandhi said that during the protest, many students’ arms, legs and ribs were broken and a large number of people were injured. He said that accountability should be fixed for everyone from those who plan the action to those who implement it. Congress is preparing to raise this issue in Parliament also.

On the other hand, student organization Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) claimed that the government had accepted its major demands. Announcing the withdrawal of the nationwide agitation, the organization said that this decision has been taken after the resignation of the Education Minister, assurance of maximum possible assistance to the families affected in suicide cases to NEET paper leak, review of cases registered against the protesters and discussion on examination reforms.

Meanwhile, the scope of the movement has expanded beyond the issue of education to E-20 fuel policy. Many comments and memes regarding this policy went viral on social media, in which Union Minister Nitin Gadkari was criticized. However, the Central Government has clarified that at present there is no proposal to increase the ethanol blending in petrol by more than 20 percent and ethanol is not mixed in the premium petrol available in the country.

Political commentator Tehseen Poonawala has also announced a march in Delhi on July 31 in protest against the E-20 policy. They demand that the availability of E-10 petrol be restored for E-10 compatible vehicles, the price of ethanol-free petrol be reduced and the problems faced by owners of vehicles manufactured before 2023 be addressed.

Meanwhile, in the upcoming session of Parliament, there are indications that there will be a heated political debate regarding the amendment bill to strict punishment to stop paper leaks as well as student agitation, police action and E-20 policy.
