From traditional woodcuts to digital printmaking, rare creations of Ghulam Mohammad Sheikh, one of the pioneers of India’s art world, are under one roof. A colorful collage of the movement he started to bring art beyond the four-walled gallery to the doorsteps of common people, is now in Kolkata. Organized at the TRI Art & Culture Gallery, Ballygunge, this exhibition showcases various unique creations of his artistic journey from 1950 to AD. Eminent artist Pushpamala N has curated this grand exhibition for art lovers.

Curator Pushpamala N. said, “Ghulam Mohammad Sheikh is an internationally renowned painter but relatively little has been discussed about his printmaking. This exhibition presents his seven decades long printmaking practice in front of the audience anew.”

All the rare creations of the living legend Ghulam Mohammad Sheikh are mainly presented in two ways in this exhibition, Hand Prints and Mind Prints. The first chapter of the exhibition Hand Prints as a memory canvas! Various works of linocuts, woodcuts, lithographs, etchings made by the artist since the 1950s are arranged here. From writing poetry under the pseudonym Malaya during school life to publishing handmade progress magazines. Later, through Kshitij and Vrischik magazines, the initiative to bring art beyond the boundaries of the drawing room to the hands of the general reader was even more impressive. He taught at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Baroda for a long time and founded the Chhaap Foundation to bring Indian printmaking to a wider audience. He has earned many honors and recognitions at home and abroad for his artistic practice and contribution.

On the other hand, the ‘Mind Prints’ section captures the digital revolution of the 21st century. Started in 2001, Sheikh’s digital printmaking showcases a wonderful fusion of Kabir philosophy, Mughal miniatures, Renaissance art and world cinema. Series like ‘Talisman Twins’, ‘Cinema-Still’, ‘Portraits of Artists’ or the internationally renowned ‘Mappamundi Suite’ which gave new life to the destroyed medieval world map are the main attractions of this category.

This exhibition will continue till August 2, 2026. The exhibition is open to the public every day except Monday from 11 am to 7 pm free of charge.
