Bluetooth and Battery Drain: Nowadays, everyone keeps Bluetooth on their phone active to connect earphones and smartwatches. Let’s find out what impact this has on the battery.
Bluetooth and Battery Drain: Keeping Bluetooth on has become a part of our daily routine. People keep it active all day for wireless earbuds, smartwatches, and car connectivity. Often, we forget to turn it off even after we are done using it, leaving it running day and night. This raises a common question: does keeping Bluetooth on all day drain the battery faster? Can we extend our phone's battery life by turning it off? Let’s find out...
What is Bluetooth Low Energy?
A few years ago, keeping Bluetooth on would indeed drain the phone's battery very quickly. However, technology has changed significantly since then. Modern smartphones now utilize "Bluetooth Low Energy" (BLE) technology. With this technology, if your Bluetooth isn't connected to a device like earphones or a watch, it switches to "sleep mode." During this time, it sends out minimal signals to scan for nearby devices, resulting in very low battery consumption even when Bluetooth is active.
How much battery is consumed throughout the day?
If your phone's Bluetooth remains on all day without being connected to anything, it consumes only about 1% to 3% of the total battery. However, when the phone is connected to a device, the rate of battery consumption increases slightly. Even then, it consumes far less power compared to keeping the screen brightness high, Wi-Fi, or mobile data active.
Downsides of keeping Bluetooth on
While it is true that Bluetooth doesn't drain the battery excessively, keeping it on constantly can have some downsides. If Bluetooth is left on all the time, hackers in crowded places could connect to your phone and steal your data. Additionally, when you are out, your phone may repeatedly send notifications about connecting to unknown Bluetooth devices, which can be annoying.
